They Came To Play

LEARN'N TO BURN

LEARN'N TO BURN

Spokane’s freshest rock, for two fun-filled days at CLUB-EDGE this weekend! It was the BATTLE OF THE BANDS; Six of the area’s finest (plus BUTT UGLY, the official “battle opening band”) taking stage for solid guitar-fury, screamin’ leads & enthusiastic audience appeal! All competing for their chance to score prime-opening slot for nationally touring ROYAL BLISS (Club Edge; 11-13)

A big thanks to ALL the bands, none of them ‘sucked’ and that made it hard; The judges definitely had their work cut out, weighing each band’s own strength and weakness, and the crowd had their favorites, too!

L S Diablo wins "the battle"

HERE ARE THE FINAL RESULTS:

#1. L S DIABLO  …Will be opening for ROYAL BLISS on 11-13!!!

#2. VANGUARD

#3. PRIOR SIN

Honorable mentions to BUMP DOOSIE, CRIMSON RESOLVE, and LEVEL ZERO for awesome sets. Everyone came to rock the place, and I would have been happy to have any one of theses bands opening for a number of shows…

NEXT UP: SUPERSUCKERS @ CLUB-EDGE (SPRAGUE & VISTA) THIS FRIDAY NIGHT, 10-30. I remember watching these all-star punkin’ rock-a-billy blues-dudes opening for FOO FIGHTERS, in San Fran about 15 years ago at the legendary Fillmore and the SMOKED THE NIGHT… Don’t miss this show! LO-DOUGH and good to go, we’ll see you Friday night.

POST-SHOW UPDATE:
Want to thank ROYAL BLISS for an awesome show at CLUB-EDGE! …You want some pictures?100_1110100_1012100_1073100_1029

Royal Bliss pics are here!

Playing to a “private party” of Rock listeners who braved the November weather to Rock the night away, we enjoyed opening acts; 33, Character Flaw, and L.S.Di-ablo (Winners of the “battle Of the Bands” two weeks ago, seen below) There were also many “Cameo” appearences by Tanzi and a few of the RACKTOBER CALANDER GIRLS 100_1039sharing stage with GEOFF SCOTT as MC’s for the evening. It was a great night of solid wall-to-wall rockin’ and excitement! ROYAL BLISS performed a full set and then asked everybody if they minded if they played a few new songs (Not always a good idea, but this night, the crowd seemed genuinely receptive in the notion) it was good to hear a fresh set.

They also had a NEW CD in tow “STUDIO A” (that isn’t going to be officially released until next week) found one at the merch stand, and bought it, then I turned around to see Taylor standing there “Congratulations, you just bought the VERY FIRST copy of our new CD!” *Bonus prize* it was then promptly whisked backstage to be signed by the entire band. Kewl Beans!

PS: Chris, love the “Dudley Doo-right” you should keep it, bro.

Homecoming Weekend

A BIG “SHOUT OUT” to the vets, the V.A., the Air Force (Fairchild Volunteers) and WPA for an awesome turnout and the largest Foliage Flight in the 19 years Washington Pilots have been doing this incredibly heartfelt event. ( …If you’d like to follow along, see album posted here)… Absolutely LOVE working with the Vets, The Air Force People and the fellow Washingtonian-State Pilots on this event every year.

Down for the count

Down for the count

Then it was off for some well deserved R&R with those fun-loving hotties at THE TORCH. Always a lot of fun in the Lake City; Bikini Bull Riding, Bikini Ice Shots, Bikini Racktober Parties, or, in this case~

the Bikini FOXXY BOXING

She is going to RACK IT UP for another crack at the RACKTOBER calander and I would hope for a year of whatever month she lands upon. That’s MY vote!

What month would YOU be? …I’m still kinda partial to Bunny Month ~ but am willing to negotiate. OW* stop hitting me!

Power Windows (95)

America… LOOK OUT!  The year was 1995, and I had been working at a station in town doing the Local Music Show… from my Mom’s basement every week. The program lasted for 5 YEARS (A record for local Rock radio at the time) sometimes shipping them in from Oregon or Seattle – or Canadia just to play their CD and sit on “the couch” and hang out in the theme of a giant backstage party. We had great names and big stars and little bands and unknown stars. Artists like Peter Cornell (Chris’s brother), Supersonic Soul Pimps, Civilized Animal, and Myles Kennedy (remember Citizen Swing & Mayfield Four?) … all “cut their rug” with us and occasionally treated you to live sets while Mom & Floyd would come down and serve us hot chowder and try not to complain about the smoke pots too much…

The ORIGINAL "Basement" set

The ORIGINAL "Basement" set

I bring you this little “Flashback”, because: Today, the GEOFF SCOTT WEBSITE turns 14 years old! Born out of necessity (the mother of local-rock invention, like duct tape) as a way to post clips, photos and links to bands we were talking to each Sunday night  and every show. (that stations website never changed in the 5 years we ran this thing) But for ME… “if it’s on the air, you’ll find it there” has always been the key.

The website, in it’s original form, was housed on AOL Hometown and therefore was afforded just FIVE MEASLY MEGABYTES of internet world. We rotated graphics, made a little “chat” blog, and posted very tiny clips and announcements based on the current show and next week’s shows, etc. I even, for a time, produced a “streaming” video content that was actually (I can tell you now) nothing more than a series of .GIF images I shot while recording the show, and then constantly updated to the Hometown server at just the right time… as it played back on-air. But then there was this 4 track Akai Reel To Reel I to tow with me everywhere I went (including the station)

Rock 106 & a YES t-shirt... ahh good times!

Rock 106 & a YES t-shirt... ahh good times!

Now…  sure have come a long way together since the old days of my first Windows 95 computer (75 MHZ, 697MB hard-drive, 8mb of RAM= $3,000) and My mom’s old Apple2 on the dining room table back in Junior High; the “Commodore-64 Kids” could only gawk at.

Last Summer Splash!

firstsplashLabor Day Weekend: After a great showdown of last minute concert activity capping off the final week of “technical” summer… Sorry I missed Jet Black Stare, those guys are great! But, Manson played TWO shows in Spokane on Monday (the added show) and Thursday (the original~ SOLD-OUT show). For most of the week we heard how good both shows were with an emphasis between the shows as we took your “Manson Sightings”. Some of my favorites  included; “Running down the Centennial Trail in pink spandex runner-shorts”, “Returning baby-clothes (with Twiggy) at the BABY GAP”, “Sucking all the sun out of a local tanning salon”… and the GP winning sighting: “Up in the mountains making who-haa with the Yeti”! Concert reports began to trickle in of Stage-Peeing, Enough Strobe action to send an anime’ maker into convulsions, and Marilyn didn’t like the way a fan was getting too close, so he threw a plastic can and beaned the dude off the head.(Angel’s report; unconfirmed)

Meanwhile, back at the radio-ranch, I’d been running a small “covert” operation, keeping me on my toes and doubly busy with additional pre-weekend duties. On Thursday, I actually (sorry!) pre-recorded my show and was escorted to a top-secret location on Fairchild AirForce base, where we provided live entertainment for 500 troops!

Beer-Goggle Run

Beer-Goggle Run

It was awesome- all the E-1′s – E-4′s have some good memories with ROCK 94.5 on-base. I was SLIGHTLY humbled, as always, to work with these fine men & women who often give so much to protect our nations freedoms~ yet, seek so little in return. (And to think I complain when the traffic holds me up ten minutes in construction)

Food Is Served!

Food Is Served!

…So we played the AC/DC “WE SALUTE YOU”, as I tried to convey my personal feelings of gratitude the best I could; Mudvayne, Lamb Of God, and Killswitch CDs & DVD’s. There was the “Pie-in-the-face” of the Captain, The “Beer Goggles” obstacle course, The giant-Inflatable boxing-ring, and the ice-cold “dunk tank”.  Airman Roberts would be “dunked” like a trooper multiple times throughout the course of the breezy-cool & very dusty pre-fall afternoon. And all this, while sargents & command cooked the hamburgers, serving the long staggered feed-line. “better than M.R.E.’s, eh?”  Special thanks to the FIRST-FOUR program, SNAP (Ron Hardin), and Sr. Airman Peters for bringing us in for that truly memorable “company” event.

Its CAMO time

Its CAMO time

*** I actually miss hosting their “Open House” like I used to (for about ten years), so this was a great way to get back in touch with some of those old-fond memories I have of being a guest, in base-life. And, also, on a personal note: I was deeply touched by the many airmen who came up to me, took me aside, and mentioned how “you guys got me through~” or “When i was overseas, there was no base, but there was YOU guys online…” Or, “you’re my lifeline when i am not home”

Winners

Winners

… i kind of had no Idea. I know we stream online and the computer in the back of the room just sits there spitting out packets of music and program, while lights blink on and off below~ but I never really think of those on the other end like that, maybe I’ll start paying a little more attention to what’s going down that worldwide pipeline. JUST KNOW THAT WE REALLY REALLY DO…

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.

High In The Sky (the sequel)

Do you remember Becky “I promise not to scream…EEEEEEk?!?

Becky and Joe

Becky and Joe

of our ‘HIGH IN THE SKY‘ let’s-learn-to-fly-heli’s video series from last summer? (See the VIDEO HERE) Well, her &  Joe, “PhunBobby”, and I ~ went up in the Spokane Airways 172 for quite the little flight-reunion of sorts. I had recently gotten licensed and Becky was there through proxy, curious and learning right along… Call it “the big get-even” I guess, as she was the one to embarrass me in front of all the rock listeners when we found out I could fly an airplane solo to Missoula no problem, but when it came to hovering a helicopter; I could barely keep us from dancing an aerobatic slow-waltz for more than a minute or so. :P

Safety is #1 on the list. So, when i felt the 30mph gusts buffeting my car ~ I wasn’t even sure we’d be removing the tie-downs, let alone piling four people into the 1500lb aircraft and departing for the hazy azure colored smoke-filled sky.

captain Gee-off

captain Gee-off

Luckily, we had some weather smarts, planning this venture for later in the day, giving mother nature a chance to relax… As the Pilot-In-Command,  passenger comfort is #2 on that list. My instructor, Dave Du4,  just happened to be working this day, and happily looked over my paperwork. The biggest concern; besides the winds, were the four passengers in our 4-seat plane.  What if someone had “fudged” their weight a few pounds? Or had a 60lb camera? Dave made sure I knew the density altitude of our 2,475′ above-sea-level airport that day was 5,600′ and the Runway only 6,400′ long.

Spokane International

Spokane International

So, I added a “fudge” factor, determining we may be as little as 30lbs of max. So~ we removed some fuel. Now I had 80lbs to “play with”. Dave was satisfied with this, giving “thumbs-up” as we all slithered onto the 109-degree tarmac for pre-flight.

Hot, isn’t the word- It was a freakin’ oven in that plane, with one window~ about the size of a microwave.  I warned about “the bumps” assuring them we’d return shortly if things weren’t comfortable. We’d also scrapped plans for “touch & goes” at Deer Park simply not enough runway available, and instead, fly for “pleasure” over lake Coeur D’Alene.

Looking below it seemed everybody was out that evening! From numerous boats (looking like white caps on the lake), to the sold-out game at Avista stadium, races at Stateline & Spokane speedways,

'Lake City' ...invaded by tents

to the small “tent-city”  on Sherman Ave “Art On The Green”… (PICS POSTED IN ‘FLYBOY2′ ALBUM)

the 'after' shot ~ no puke stains, see?

no puke stains, see?

Returning, we found the “big airport” through the haze of some thick BC Forrest-fire smoke, made a rather UN-eventful 12kt crosswind landing, commented to the ground-crew how we never did find any of those ’727 shaking’ bumps reported; Just happiness, smooth air, and the most beautiful summer’s sky one could hope to fly. “Go see Dave”, I said, and “get those wings, Becky!” …when she finished screaming, that is…  in pure delight of flight.

Spokane Gets Smacked!!!

Smak-attack

Smak-attack

GODSMACK RECAP: *Phew* finally got the DJ voice back, after an incredible show with GODSMACK sunday night at “the Factory”. It was a lean-mean somewhat stripped down show put pure GodSmack with all the essentials. (see set list below)  Prepared to open for Motley crue the very next day for Cruefest II, it was Sully, Robbie, Tony, and Shannon alone. No “Voodoo-girls”, No Pyros, No 20 minute Sully and Shannon Drum-off, or acoustic interlude. Like a machine, they came out pounding and kept the crowd pushing forward bouncing in a giant unison as if “the factory” floor had giant springs beneath it! Higlights included seeing Sully do the guitar solo (that’s new) and the crowd singing VOODOO so loud nobody noticed that Robbie’s bass had stopped working and he stood on stage pounding it looking at the stage mix crew waiting for them to outfit him with another in mid-song. Instictively, the band played on without seeming to even notice, masterfully Tony adopting the bass-parts betwen his etheral guitar chords (of all songs for this to happen on) to this bass-heavy song! Good job Tony!!! We fealt maybe Robbie wasnt having a good night but we loved him just the same~ the entire band was ontop of their game after too long of an inland-Northwest hiatus.  And the crowd showed it, with a crowd-surfer-to-mosher ratio of about 22:1. We saw some people get lifted forward across the sea of head, and tossed up over the barricades five or six times …and they were coming at a rate of six – ten a minute!  (PHOTOS)

I have some shots i’ll post to my HOTSPOTS gallery later on~ but it was great to see all those bikes and bikers gathered in one location and the local bands, “battle-cage”, booths, the Inland-helicopter specially painted R-44, 100yr biker girls, and all those sweet sweet customs and classics~ I hadn’t planned on going to an exceptionally tight schedual this week (see next post) but was personally invited by “the First lady” Jennifer Scott, and therefore, like being invited to the Royal Tea-Party by the queen- one isnt actually being INVITED… but summonsed, and one must drop whatevere it was they were doing.  So, I arrived shortly after the appointed time and was treated to lunch with the world-famous master-chopper builder MONDO, followed by “some quality time” alone with the queen… I mean the FIRST LADY! woo-hoo!!  (PHOTOS)

THE TORCH: My wife had said “Honey, this is your anniversary gift.. so go have fun at the UH-UH bar.”  Enough said. Carmen, we hope to see you in our Miss Rock-Hard comp later~

Hot & Sticky

That would best describe the feeling… And I’m not JUST talking about seeing LACUNA COIL play the Mosh-pit studios this week;

Lacuna Coil ROCKS THE MOSH (PIT)

Lacuna Coil

AND all those Bi-planes at the Great NorthWest Biplane Fly-In this weekend at Felts Feild (Spokane, Wa) I’ve added the PICTURES HERE (on my HOTWINGS site).

There is nothing more romantic than seeing classic airplanes across an old grass strip for as far as the eye can see! Sweet-wings, and great pilots, most of whom flew off at various times up to Deer Park for the landing competition. So it was a morning of non-stop fly-bys and vintage wings. Addison Pemberton got to show off his Stearman, the Speedmail, and even the now-world famous Boeing 40C. He is a very cool guy with obviously WAY TOO MUCH TIME and PARTS on his hands ;P

BOEING 40-C

Then it was off to CARTOYS for the weekend’s giant tent sale in the 95 degree heat~ Where we talked stereo, hung out with all types of Rock listeners, showed off some shiney wheels and then had a surprise visit from non-other than the “Track Offical” of Rock 94&1/2′s FREEWAY500 – Deputy Craig!

Deputy Craig with Geoff Scott heating it up at CRTOYS

(to show us the proper way to fry an egg on a harley seat) Pictures are posted on the GEOFF SCOTT *LIVE ACTION* CAM page from both fun-filled sunny days on our CARTOYS TOUR.

On a personal note: I have been very busy in the production-kitchen, cooking up our GODSMACK weekend for the show warm-up and for thre days you’ll be hearing ALOT of Godsmack and “Smak-Backs” on the air AS WE NEAR SHOWTIME.

Life Without Gunners

Great interview and special thanks to MATT SORUM for introducing us to DRIVE-A a great rocking band of young fledglings with some pretty agressive chops; Matt produced two of the songs on the CD and also took some time out to update us on VELVET REVOLVER, CAMP FREDDY,  Drumming for PERRY FARRELL’S brithday party, getting to play with OZZY (a life long dream) and why Guitar Hero is big enough to cause AEROSMITH to go back into the studio to RE-record some of heir all-time classics! Writing a game’s alot more work than we thought. MYLES KENNEDY is mentioned as well, and, why MATT SORRUM prbably won’t be rushing out to buy his tickets for this summer’s G&R tour…
